In Sweden there is another card game called Twenty-One which is similar to Blackjack, where you have to get as close to 21 as possible. If you reach 21, you lose the game. Want to know more about Blackjack and its history? You’re in the right place.

The story behind Blackjack

It is said that Blackjack is 400 years old and was known as 31 and 21. In the 1600's, a Spanish author named Miguel de Cervantes wrote about this card game in his books, and it is believed that the game had originated during these times as “31.” Players had three cards in their hand and the goal was to get as close as possible to 31.

In the 18th century, Blackjack started being called 21. As you can imagine, the goal was to get as close to 21 as possible and the main differences were that only the dealer could double and that every time a new card was issued, one had to make an effort.

During the 19th century casino games were banned because of a rise in crime and Blackjack was also prohibited. However, this soon changed, and Blackjack was introduced to land-based casinos in Las Vegas where it got its major breakthrough. Today you can find Blackjack on almost all online casinos and it is one of the most popular casino games online.

How to play Blackjack

Sit at the table and prepare yourself to play a card game that is incredibly exciting. First of all, the dealer will hand out two cards to you and place another two cards on the table in front of you, one of them face down. Then, take a good look at the two cards you have been awarded and choose one of the following to get as close to 21 as possible:

1. Fold - Fold means that you stop trying to reach the dealer’s score because you are already close to 21.

2. Hit - You take one card in the hope to get closer to 21.

3. Double - When you take a new card you can double the bet. If you choose to double then you cannot take a new card. Conversely, if you took a card earlier on then you cannot double.

4. Split - You can choose to split your hands if you are dealt a pair of cards of the same value. When you make a split, you are dealt another two cards and your bet is doubled.

5. Hard hand - This is a hand without an ace that you can bust (go over 21) with just a single hit.

6. Soft hand - A soft hand is a hand with two cards containing an ace and cannot be busted with one hit since the A can have a value of 1 or 11.
